Every child deserves to thrive. Public charter schools help make this a reality by empowering parents with access to high-quality opportunities that meet their children’s needs.
That’s why it’s shocking that charter schools receive $1,600 less per student than other public schools. The funding gap is caused by severely unequal facilities funding.
Public charter schools don’t receive any property tax dollars, which traditional districts rely on to buy and renovate their buildings. The Texas Legislature previously created a fair and reasonable formula for funding public charter school facilities, but there’s a problem.
State law includes an arbitrary cap on total spending — regardless of how many public charter schools and students there are. This means facilities funding per student has continued to decline as enrollment grows. Inflation makes the situation worse.
As a result, public charter schools must pull funding from other priorities — such as teacher salaries, technology, and tutoring — to cover facilities expenses.
All public school students, families, and educators deserve to be treated fairly.
